- About
- Marvell designs chips that move and switch data inside AI data centers. Its main products are custom AI chips built for specific large customers, and networking chips that connect thousands of AI chips together at high speed. Marvell does not run its own factories. It pays other companies, like TSMC, to manufacture the chips it designs.
- Thesis
- The market still prices Marvell's custom chip business as unpredictable and unproven. Revenue depends on a small number of big customer programs starting up. Growth in this business has swung sharply before, which makes investors cautious about counting on the pace management now guides. For the gap to close, Marvell's newest programs, expanded with a major cloud customer, must ramp up on schedule from fiscal 2029 onward. Marvell's new 2-nanometer optical interconnect products, shown at an industry conference in September 2026, must also convert into real design wins, not just investor excitement. Custom silicon revenue must keep more than doubling each year, as management has guided for fiscal 2028 and fiscal 2029. At its Investor Day on October 6, 2026, management raised its targets. It now guides fiscal 2028 revenue to about $20 billion and fiscal 2029 custom revenue to more than $12 billion. It also set a path to $70 billion to $90 billion of revenue in fiscal 2031. These are targets, not results. The next checkpoint is the Q3 fiscal 2027 report, expected near November 27, 2026. If these programs ramp up as planned over the next three to five quarters, Marvell's growth can catch up to faster-growing peers, and the gap can close. If a large customer moves work in-house or to a rival like Broadcom, the gap could persist.
- Risks
- Marvell's custom chip revenue depends on a small number of large customers. If one of them moves its next chip generation in-house or to a competitor, Marvell's growth outlook can fall quickly.
Marvell competes with Broadcom, which has a larger and more established custom chip business. Marvell must keep winning new programs to grow at the pace management has guided.
Marvell does not own the factories that make its chips. A capacity shortage at its manufacturing partners can delay Marvell's own product ramps.
- Balance sheet
- Marvell has modest debt for its size. At August 1, 2026, goodwill and intangible assets were $16.5 billion, mostly from past chip company purchases. This was about 60% of total assets of $27.6 billion. Debt principal was $5.0 billion at that date, all unsecured fixed-rate senior notes. Nothing is due in the next 12 months, and $1.25 billion is due in 2028. In April 2026, Marvell issued $1.0 billion of 5.300% notes due 2036 and repaid $500 million of notes due April 2026. Cash was $3.9 billion, and subsidiaries outside the United States held about $1.7 billion of it. Thus net debt was only about $1.1 billion. In the first half of fiscal 2027, operating income of $799 million covered interest expense of $114 million about 7 times. The $1.5 billion revolving credit facility to June 2030 was undrawn. The April 2026 bond documents showed ratings of Baa2 at Moody's, BBB at S&P and BBB+ at Fitch. Some items do not show as debt. NVIDIA bought $2.0 billion of convertible preferred stock in 2026, which can convert into about 21.8 million shares. The Celestial AI purchase can require more cash and shares through fiscal 2029 if revenue goals are met. A new customer warrant for up to 59.0 million shares can dilute holders. The low net debt gives room to invest in custom chip programs and keep buybacks ($400 million in the first half of fiscal 2027). The bigger cost to shareholders is more likely dilution than interest.
