- Company name
- Baidu
- Sector
- Internet search & AI cloud
- About
- Baidu runs a major search engine in China and the Baidu App, which had 644 million monthly active users in June 2026. It earns money from online marketing, from AI cloud services (computing power, GPU cloud and AI models for companies), from AI applications such as Baidu Wenku and Baidu Drive, and from Apollo Go, its robotaxi service in 28 cities. It also consolidates iQIYI, a video streaming company. Revenue was RMB 31.3 billion in Q2 2026. Baidu Core's AI-powered Business was half of Baidu General Business revenue. Baidu is listed on Nasdaq and in Hong Kong, and it uses a VIE structure to control its businesses in China.
- Thesis
- The market fears that AI answers keep shrinking Baidu's search advertising, and it applies a discount for China risk. Online marketing revenue fell 19% from a year earlier to RMB 13.1 billion in Q2 2026, and the legacy business fell 23%. AI Cloud Infra revenue grew 50% to RMB 7.3 billion, but total revenue still fell 4%. Baidu also holds total cash and investments of RMB 283.1 billion, but investors give little value to cash held in China. For the gap to close, three things must be true. The fall in online marketing must slow, so that total revenue grows again. AI Cloud Infra must keep growing fast with better margins. Apollo Go must show a path to profit as it expands outside China. The Q3 2026 report, estimated for about November 18, 2026, gives the next test. Even if these checks pass, part of the gap will probably stay, because of US-China tension, the VIE structure and the weighted voting rights. The main reason the gap may not close is a faster loss of search revenue to AI chat products from other companies.
- Risks
- AI chat products from other Chinese companies can take search traffic and advertising from Baidu. Online marketing revenue fell 19% in Q2 2026.
US-China tension can bring export limits on AI chips, sanctions or delisting pressure. Limits on chips can slow the AI cloud business.
Baidu controls its Chinese businesses through VIE contracts and has weighted voting rights. Chinese regulators can change the rules for internet companies, and shareholders have limited rights.
AI cloud growth needs large spending on chips and data centers. If prices for AI computing fall in China, returns on this spending can be low.
