- YUMYum Brands trades around $137.34, about 11% below the analysts' $155.00 fair value estimate. The market worries about three things. First,at a multistatediscount because a Cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce hithealth scare at Taco Bell in July 2026, and Taco Bell US same-store sales fell 2% in raised doubt about how fast the weeks after itbrand recovers. Taco Bell makes most of Yum's profit. Third-party foot-traffic data still showed Taco Bell US visits well below last year's level in mid-September 2026, so investors want proof thatnearly two months after the recovery lastsoutbreak. SecondSo the market wants official same-store sales to prove a full recovery, not just a slowing decline. Investors also worry about KFC, whose same-store sales grew onlygrowth slowed to 2% in Q2 2026, and as Yum no longer reportsstopped reporting KFC US sales on their own. Third, Yum also carries about $11.5 billion of debt with a below-investment-grade credit rating. But the rest of the business keeps growing. Excluding Pizza Hutdebt, systemwhich limits flexibility if sales grew 7% in Q2 2026, from 6% more restaurants and 4% higher same-store salesstay soft. BeforeFor the outbreakgap to close, Taco Bell's US same-store sales grew 8%need to turn positive again in Q1 and 7% in Q2a quarter Yum reports after the outbreak. KFC needs to show its international unit growth can offset a slower US business. Selling Pizza Hut removes, completed in mid-2026, already removed Yum's weakest brand. Yum plans to use and freed about $2.3 billion of net proceeds to pay downfor debt paydown and buy back stock, under a new $4 billion buyback. Management kept its long-term plan: about 5% more restaurants each yearThe next scheduled test is Yum's Q3 2026 earnings report, about 7% system sales growthexpected around November 2, and at least 8% core operating profit growth. If2026, which should show whether Taco Bell traffic recovers and same-store sales have recovered. If the recovery holds up in that report and KFC keeps opening stores abroad's international store growth continues, the gap to fair valuediscount can close over the next two to three quarters. The main risk is that customer trust takes longer to recover than the health scare itself. Lower-income consumers may also keep pulling back on fast food, so Taco Bell's recovery could take longer than the market expects.
- Risks
- Taco Bell makes most of Yum's profit. The July 2026 Cyclospora outbreak pushed its US same-store sales down 2% in the weeks after. If customers stay away longer than expected, Yum's profit growth slows.
Third-party foot-traffic data showed Taco Bell US same-store visits still about 12% below last year through September 11, 2026, nearly two months after the July Cyclospora outbreak. This suggests the sales recovery is slower than management described in late July.
Yum has about $11.5 billion of debt and a below-investment-grade credit rating (BB+ at S&P, Ba2 at Moody's). It targets debt of about 4 times EBITDA while it spends $4 billion on buybacks. This leaves less room if sales drop.
KFC same-store sales grew only 2% in Q2 2026, and Yum no longer reports KFC US sales on their own. KFC's growth depends more and more on new stores outside the US.
Lower-income customers are cutting back on fast food, and weight-loss drugs such as GLP-1s can reduce how much people eat out. Both can slow traffic at Yum's brands.
Yum still provides its Byte by Yum! software to Pizza Hut after the sale, and part of the price depends on an earn-out through 2030. The separation adds some short-term complexity.
