- The market discounts Meta trades about 11% belowbecause its $850 fair-value estimate. The gap traces back to record AI spending: full is outrunning the cash its advertising business generates. Full-year 2026 capital spending guidance is nowreached $130-145 billion, up from $72 billion in 2025. That spending is starting to outrun the cash the ad business throws off. Free cash flow collapsed 91% to $784 million in Q2 2026, and Meta suspended its share buyback, and it is now funding to help fund new data centers. It is partly funding them with debt instead, such as the $12.5 billion bond priced for its El Paso, Texas campus in July 2026 at a meaningfully higher yield than before. Investors also worry, industry-wide, that heavy AI spending will not earn back its cost soon. Goldman Sachs said in September 2026 that AI hyperscalers, the largest cloud computing providers, may need close to a similar dealtrillion dollars a year earlierin AI revenue. But the underlying businessThat is still healthy: advertising revenue grew 28% in Q2 2026what it would take just to turn a strong profit. For the gap to close, and Meta's new AI products are starting to show real tractionmust keep converting into paid, durable revenue. Its new Muse assistant app reached #1 on the UAdvertising must also keep growing faster than costs.S Early signs are positive. App Store within two weeks of its September 2026 launch, and Meta One, a new paid AI subscription layered across itsMeta's apps, drew more than 15 million subscriptions and trials in its first week in September 2026. The Muse assistant app reached number one on the U.S. App Store within two weeks of launch. Meta also cleared a major legal overhangmatter in August 2026, agreeing to pay about $17 billion over 10 years to settle teen-safety lawsuits from 47 states. Thousands of other individual lawsuits over similar claims are still pending, avoiding a jury trialthough. If these new AI products keepMeta is expected to report Q3 2026 results around October 29, 2026. That report should show whether Meta One and Muse are converting into paid usage and advertisingsteady revenue keeps outgrowing costsand whether free cash flow is recovering. If that evidence holds up over the next two to three quarters, the discount can close. But if capitalIf AI spending keeps outrunning cash flow and debt financing keeps getting pricierinto 2027, profitability could stay under pressure well beyond 2026it may not.
- Risks
- Meta's AI spending is now outrunning the cash the business generates. Free cash flow fell 91% to $784 million in Q2 2026 as capital spending hit $31.1 billion, and share buybacks are suspended. Meta is increasingly funding new data centers with debt, such as the $12.5 billion bond for its El Paso campus, priced at a yield near 7-7.5%, well above what a similar Meta-backed bond paid a year earlier. If AI products do not generate enough revenue soon, this financing could keep getting more expensive.
Meta depends on advertising for almost all of its revenue. A slowdown in the ad market would hit Meta harder than a more diversified company. Meta One, its first real subscription revenue stream, is still new and unproven at scale.
Meta keeps facing costly child-safety litigation. In 2026 alone, a New Mexico jury and judge ordered Meta to pay about $942 million combined for harming youth mental health, and Meta agreed to pay about $17 billion over 10 years to settle claims from 47 more states. Thousands of individual lawsuits over the same allegations are still pending in federal court.
In September 2026, Goldman Sachs estimated that AI hyperscalers, including Meta, may need roughly $1 trillion a year in AI-driven revenue to earn a strong return on current AI spending, versus about $300 billion a year just to break even. If AI revenue across the industry falls short of that, investor patience with Meta's own spending could run out.
Meta competes for AI talent and AI infrastructure capacity with well-funded rivals. Its Superintelligence Labs division has already gone through layoffs and a reorganization once this year, a sign the AI strategy is still being worked out.
- Recent events
- 2026-09-25: Meta stock fell 3.4%, giving back some of the prior day's gain, after Goldman Sachs warned that AI hyperscalers may need close to $1 trillion a year in AI revenue to earn a real profit on their current spending pace.
2026-09-21: Meta's new consumer AI products started gaining traction. Meta One, a paid subscription across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta AI, launched September 15 and drew more than 15 million subscriptions and trials in its first week, and the new Muse assistant app, launched September 8, reached #1 on Apple's U.S. App Store. The stock jumped 11% on September 21, and Wells Fargo raised its price target to $796 from $640.
2026-08-26: Meta agreed to pay about $17 billion over 10 years to settle a lawsuit brought by 47 states over teen social-media addiction, adding default two-hour daily time limits and overnight access blocks for teen accounts. The deal ended the trial before CEO Mark Zuckerberg was set to testify.
2026-08-07: A New Mexico jury found Meta violated the state's consumer-protection law over child safety in March 2026 and imposed a $375 million penalty. In August 2026, a judge in the same case separately ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a youth mental-health fund, bringing its total New Mexico liability to about $942 million.
2026-07-29: Meta reported Q2 2026 results. Revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion, but net income fell 14% to $15.8 billion on a $2.4 billion legal charge and $1.18 billion of severance costs, and free cash flow collapsed 91% to $784 million as capital spending hit $31.1 billion. Investors demanded a yield near 7-7.5%, well above what a similar Meta-backed bond paid in 2025, a sign that debt financing for AI data centers is getting more expensive.
2026-05-20: Meta began cutting about 8,000 jobs, roughly 10% of its headcount, shifting the freed-up payroll budget into new AI "pods" under chief AI officer Alexandr Wang's Superintelligence Labs. More cuts followed later in the year.
