About

British American Tobacco makes and sells tobacco and nicotine products around the world. Its global cigarette brands are Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, and Rothmans. In the United States, it also sells Newport, Camel, and Natural American Spirit through Reynolds American.

The company also sells New Category products: Vuse vapor devices, glo heated tobacco, and Velo nicotine pouches. New Categories gave 15.8% of revenue in the first half of 2026. Most company profit still comes from cigarettes.

Thesis

Many investors do not own tobacco stocks, and regulators keep adding rules. Because of this, the market pays less for each pound of BAT's cash flow, and part of this gap will probably stay. The market also doubts that New Categories can replace the profit that cigarettes lose. New Categories are BAT's vapor products, heated tobacco, and nicotine pouches.

Their contribution margin was 13.3% in the first half of 2026, against 58.0% for cigarettes and other combustibles. BAT now expects global cigarette industry volume to fall about 3% in 2026, up from about 2% in February. For the rest of the gap to close, New Category revenue must keep growing at a mid-teens rate, and its contribution margin must keep rising towards BAT's target of at least 30% by 2030. Leverage must also return inside 2.0 to 2.5 times adjusted EBITDA by the end of 2026, as management expects.

The pre-close trading update in December 2026 and the full-year 2026 results on February 11, 2027 give the next evidence. New EU proposals for tobacco product rules and tobacco taxes can also change the outlook for Velo in Europe. If these tests pass, part of the gap can close over the next four to six quarters. The main risk is that faster cigarette declines or tougher pouch rules hold back New Category profit.

British American Tobacco carries a large debt load from the 2017 purchase of Reynolds American. After £2.6 billion of dividends, free cash flow was negative £349 million in H1 2026, so the dividend and the £1.3 billion buyback depend on stronger second-half cash flow.

Risks

  • BAT now expects global cigarette industry volume to fall about 3% in 2026. It expected about 2% in February and about 2.5% in June. In the first half of 2026, BAT's own cigarette volume in the United States fell 5.2%.
  • France banned the sale and import of nicotine pouches from April 1, 2026. In December 2025, France's highest administrative court suspended the ban on manufacture and export until it makes a final decision. The EU is also revising its tobacco product rules and tobacco taxes, which could add flavor limits and excise taxes on pouches. These rules can slow Velo, BAT's fastest-growing product line.
  • In May 2026, US Customs and Border Protection said that a joint operation with the FDA had seized more than 18 million illegal vaping devices worth more than $175 million. Only a small number of e-cigarette products hold full FDA marketing authorization. Large volumes of illegal disposable vapes still compete with Vuse on price.
  • At the end of 2025, BAT's leverage was 2.55 times adjusted EBITDA (adjusted for Canada), just above the top of its 2.0 to 2.5 times target range. BAT expects to return inside the range by the end of 2026 from cash generation. Weak cash flow in the second half of 2026 could delay this.
  • BAT has a new CFO, Dragos Constantinescu, who started September 1, 2026, and a new Regional Director for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Celina Li, from January 2027. A leadership transition adds short-term execution risk.

It narrowed the expected currency headwind on EPS to about 2% to 2.5%. The ADS closed at $54.85, down from $56.05 the day before.
