- Investors price Alibaba's AI spending as a drag on profit, not as an investment. Non-GAAP net income has collapsed even as revenue keeps growing. It fell 75% year over year in the quarter ended June 2026. The market fears this spending, plus subsidies in a delivery price war against Meituan and JD.com, could permanently compress margins rather than pay off later. For the market to change its mind, Alibaba Cloud's external revenue growth needs to keep accelerating past the 45% pace it posted last quarter. AI-related product revenue, already at an annualized run rate of RMB 49.5 billion, needs to keep compounding toward a scale that clearly justifies the spending. In August 2026, Alibaba raised about $10.2 billion through a new share placement dedicated entirely to AI infrastructure. It followed with new chip and AI product launches in September, including the Zhenwu V900 chip and the Wan3.0 video model. These are signs the AI bet keeps expanding, not winding down. Insider buying by founder Jack Ma and CEO Eddie Wu after the placement suggests management does not see the added shares as a sign of trouble. A separate discount also weighs on the stock, tied to US-China tension. Alibaba trades as a US ADR, an American depositary receipt, a US-listed certificate that represents its shares. It is backed by a variable interest entity structure, a legal setup used because China restricts direct foreign ownership of the underlying business. A brief, since-withdrawn US listing of Alibaba as an alleged Chinese military company in February 2026 showed how quickly sentiment can turn on US-China friction. The next scheduled test is Alibaba's fiscal Q2 2027 earnings, expected around December 1,in late November 2026. It should show whether Cloud and AI revenue growth are outrunning the capital spending. If Cloud and AI growth keep outpacing spending over the next two to four quarters, the market could start crediting the investment instead of penalizing it. If US-China tension flares again, that separate discount could persist regardless of how the business performs.
