- About
- AppLovin runs an AI-driven advertising platform. Its AXON system predicts which ads will perform well, and bids for ad space in real time. App developers, and increasingly e-commerce merchants, pay AppLovin to place ads through this system. In 2025, AppLovin sold its mobile game studios, so it could focus only on the advertising business.
- Thesis
- Investors now doubt AppLovin's AI-driven ad story. On August 5, 2026, the company disclosed that its generative AI video tool was still a work in progress. Revenue also missed consensus estimates that day. A securities fraud lawsuit followed. It alleges AppLovin overstated how fast its AI models were improving. In September 2026, an analyst warned that AppLovin's market-share growth has stalled against rivals such as Unity. The gap can close if AppLovin ships the delayed video tool. It also needs to keep improving its AXON ad model on a visible schedule. It must show its e-commerce expansion is real. One analyst already flagged soft e-commerce growth in June 2026, even while calling the stock's slide overdone. That expansion is not yet proven at scale. The SEC closed a separate, earlier investigation into AppLovin's data-collection practices in August 2026 with no action. This removes one worry but not the newer AI-disclosure lawsuit. Q3 2026 earnings in early November 2026 are the next hard test of both ad revenue growth and e-commerce traction. The securities lawsuit's lead-plaintiff deadline is November 16, 2026. The case itself will likely run well into 2027, so this legal issue will not lift soon. If AppLovin's execution improves and e-commerce results firm up over the next two to four quarters, the discount can close. If the growth slowdown the analyst flagged proves durable, it may not.
- Risks
- Multiple short-seller firms have accused AppLovin of improper data collection and ad-fraud-like practices. The SEC closed its own investigation in August 2026 with no action. This does not rule out future lawsuits or enforcement action from Apple's or Google's app stores.
A securities fraud class action, covering the period February 12, 2026 through August 5, 2026, alleges AppLovin overstated the pace of its AI model improvements and understated delays in its generative AI video ad tool. The case is active, with a lead-plaintiff deadline of November 16, 2026, and could run well into 2027.
AppLovin's revenue depends on its AXON AI model, which decides how to target and price ads. This model is proprietary, so outsiders cannot fully verify how it works. A change in the model's calibration can swing reported revenue.
An Edgewater Research note published in September 2026, based on channel checks with AppLovin's business partners, says market-share growth has stalled and its MAX ad platform is nearing a functional ceiling, with Unity named as a growing competitive threat.
AppLovin is putting its next growth phase on a business it barely ran before 2025: self-serve e-commerce advertising. This customer base is new. Its spending and retention patterns are not yet proven the way its mobile gaming ad network's patterns are.
- Balance sheet
- Cash: $3.1B
Debt: $3.5B
Net debt: $400M
Interest cover: 29×
Undrawn credit line: $1.0B
Debt due within 12 months: $0.0M
Last debt due: 2054
Ratings: Fitch BBB+ (stable outlook)
AppLovin sold its Apps business in June 2025, and it now has only unsecured fixed-rate notes at the parent, with no bank debt outstanding. Free cash flow was $2.15 billion in the first half of 2026, so the debt does not limit the company. The debt is the $3.55 billion of senior notes issued in November 2024, with coupons of 5.125% to 5.950%. The notes mature from December 2029, so nothing is due before late 2029. Interest cover is income from operations over interest expense in the first half of 2026. Fitch raised its rating on June 22, 2026. The 10-Q says that several agencies give the notes investment-grade ratings. Equity is small at $3.2 billion because the company spends most of its cash on buybacks. Buybacks were $1.5 billion in the first half of 2026, with $1.8 billion of authorization left. Goodwill of $1.5 billion comes from past purchases. The main uses of cash stay buybacks and investment in the ad platform.
